Just blundered across this letter from the Secretary of the Treasury dated 30 December 1968 to the then President LBJ 3 weeks before Nixon was sworn in as Commander 'n Thief. I love the terms used in the letter like: "surplus" silver and "disposal", as if silver was some sort of toxic asset that had to excised.
